I never knew I needed a glasses holder until I saw this carved wood owl at Uncommon Goods a couple of years ago. Of course I have frequently set my glasses in precarious places on/around my nightstand during the last 40+ years of deteriorating vision, but I didn’t realize a thing existed1 to charmingly keep them in one safe place.
There are other animals (and a Rapa Nui sculpture, for those much cooler than I) available to hold glasses but I liked the owl best. Next to corvids, owls are my favorite birds-that-I-desperately-want-to-befriend-but-don’t-care-about-me. From Tootsie Pop’s Mr. Owl to Winnie the Pooh’s endearing neighborhood academe but ESPECIALLY X the Owl in Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, I have always been drawn to this bird. Probably because it’s seen as the ultimate bossy-yet-kind nerd2 of the feathered world, but I’m also entranced by their stealthy flying and ability to pivot their heads nearly all the way around. Not to mention the utterly amazing production & regurgitation of pellets.3 Badassery I can only aspire4 to.
I had this owl glasses holder on my Christmas list for a few years and had resolved to just buy it myself, but then my daughter & brand-new daughter-in-law each got one for me last year. Sometimes having a duplicate gift isn’t a great thing but in this case, I immediately knew I would use both - one at my bedside and the other at my sink, both places where I tend to knock my glasses around in a nearsighted, half-asleep daze. However, my vision insurance recently offered to cover a pair with anti-fatigue/blue-light-filtering lenses so of course I jumped at the chance to pick out new frames 5 opportunity to keep my eyes healthy. Because I will only be wearing these in front of my laptop, I decided to bring the sink-owl to my office where they can keep my all-day glasses perched nearby (avoiding water spots), ready for my return to Real Life seeing.

Uncommon Goods is uncommonly good at letting me know what kinds of things I had no idea I must have. Ahem*butter&cheesehuggers*
Heyyyy, Leo/Virgo cusps!
I was fascinated when my kids got to dissect them in their Science classes, even though we all felt a little sad for the doomed mice.
Stealth, flexibility, and the ability to eat + hack up the bones of my enemies? Absolutely #goals.
Honestly this too. I develop a whole fresh persona every time I get new glasses - with this pair I am a Truly Serious Yet Sassy Smart Writer Who Totally Does Not Waste Five Hours Playing Computer Word Games.
I love your owl glasses holder(s)! I now have an adorable sloth glasses perch, which I also did not know I needed, but wanted as soon as I spotted him <3 My lovely wife got it for me last year at Christmas. I have an affinity for owls as well :)
